Pekanbaru Cross-sectoral Workshop: Integrating Air Quality Data and Health Impacts to Build Early Warning System

Research Centre for Climate Change Universitas Indonesia’s (RCCC UI) workshop concluded at Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, joined by Dinas Kesehatan (Dinkes), Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (DLH), Badan Meteorologi, Klimatogoli, dan Geofisika (BMKG), Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (BPJS), and Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD) Pekanbaru, Riau.

This event highlights the challenges in data collecting and analysi in Pekanbaru between different sectors. Participants discussed existing air quality monitoring systems, health data reporting mechanisms, and the limitations posed by fragmented data ownership, differing standards, and limited real-time access.

Building on these discussions, RCCC UI emphasized the urgent need for cross-sectoral collaboration to bridge data gaps and improve interoperability among institutions. We presented findings from ongoing research conducted in other major Indonesian cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. The results demonstrate that air pollution impacts extend beyond public health outcomes, such as increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, to significant economic consequences, including increased burden on social protection systems.

The workshop also underscored the importance of standardized data protocols, data-sharing agreements, and capacity building to ensure sustainability of the system. By aligning technical, institutional, and policy perspectives, the initiative aims to strengthen Pekanbaru’s preparedness in responding to air pollution-related health and economic risks.
