At the Media Workshop Katadata Green & IDJN, Prof. Budi Haryanto, Head of the Environmental Health cluster at the Research Center for Climate Change Universitas Indonesia (RCCC UI), explained the serious health impacts of air pollution, citing Jakarta data linking it to increased cases of pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and ischemic heart disease. He emphasized that the government’s gradual adoption of cleaner Euro 4 fuel starting this year is not only an environmental measure but also a public health intervention. RCCC UI’s projections show that if Euro 4 standards are applied from now until 2030, BPJS could save up to IDR 550 billion in healthcare costs for heart and lung diseases.
