Bandung Cross-Sectoral Workshop on Health Impacts of EURO 4/6 Fuel Transition

On February 28, 2025, a cross-sectoral workshop was held in Bandung to explore the health impacts of transitioning to higher-quality fuel standards (EURO 4/6) in Indonesia. Hosted at Mercure Hotel Nexa Supratman, the event brought together representatives from the Bandung Health Office (Dinas Kesehatan), Bandung Environment Office (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup), BRIN, BPJS Kesehatan, academic institutions such as Institut Teknologi Nasional (Itenas) Bandung and RCCC UI, as well as regional universities. The workshop opened with remarks emphasizing the urgency of collaborative efforts to address rising air pollution and its link to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Presentations covered air quality monitoring in Bandung, trends in PM2.5 and sulfur levels, and health data from Dinkes and BPJS showing increased cases and costs of respiratory illnesses, particularly among young children. Researchers highlighted findings from long-term monitoring and modeling studies, showing significant health risks tied to elevated pollutant levels. Discussions underscored the need for better interagency data integration, real-time air quality monitoring, and early-warning systems at the community level. The workshop concluded with calls to scale up the use of low-cost sensors and to strengthen local research and policy coordination to protect public health.
