Surabaya Cross-Sectoral Workshop on Health Impacts of EURO 4/6 Fuel Transition

On January 16, 2025, a cross-sectoral workshop was held in Surabaya to examine the health impacts of implementing higher-quality fuel standards (EURO 4/6) in Indonesia. Participants included representatives from Stasiun Meteorologi Kelas I Sidoarjo, BPJS Kesehatan, the Surabaya Health Office, the Surabaya Environment Office, Transportation Department, and academic institutions such as Universitas Airlangga and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. The event focused on analyzing air pollution trends, particularly PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 levels from 2013–2023, and their link to respiratory illnesses and healthcare costs in Surabaya.

The discussion highlighted a sharp rise in air pollution during the dry season, increasing respiratory disease cases, and the growing financial burden on the health system. Experts stressed the importance of accelerating the shift to cleaner fuels, improving data sharing between sectors, and adopting early warning systems for pollution-related diseases. The workshop emphasized the value of collaborative, data-driven policy to mitigate the health effects of air pollution and improve urban well-being.
